Scope of Haiti Disaster Beyond Belief
Weeks after Hurricane Ike dealt a knock-out blow to storm-battered Haiti, the deadly floodwaters have receded, leaving survivors with the task of digging homes, churches, schools, and entire neighborhoods out of the mud. In Gonaives, which lies buried under 270,000 cubic meters of mud, many families are living on rooftops, above the rotting, foul-smelling filth that covers everything in sight.
Emergency aid continues to pour into the most devastated areas, but the emphasis is gradually shifting to the country's long-term needs. Houses must be rebuilt, and farmers whose fields were destroyed need help restoring their livelihoods - for their own sake as well as for the communities that depend on the crops. Cross has already provided more than a half million dollars in emergency aid to Haiti and have committed more for long term recovery. Christian Radio Stations Join Cross for Haiti Relief

In less than a month Haiti felt the impact of two hurricanes and a pair of tropical storms. They devastated cities and towns all over the country, claiming at least 600 lives and leaving thousands without homes or food. Widespread flooding from Tropical Storm Hanna and most recently Hurricane Ike has left many areas completely under water. Around 70 percent of the country's crops have been destroyed, causing Haiti's already-high food prices to spike even higher, and places where homes used to stand are now piles of rubble.
In the months ahead Haiti confronts the massive task of rebuilding, as those who have lost their homes and livelihood start from scratch to survive. Cross International is working with several ministries throughout the country to rebuild homes and to provide for the long-term recovery needs so many face in the wake of the devastating storms. The latest estimate is that 86,000 people have been seriously affected by the hurricanes, while hundreds of thousands require some level of aid.

When 2-year-old Cadet was dropped off at Togetherness In Christ orphanage, painful black blisters covered his scrawny body, and he had a dangerously-high fever. Caregivers quickly sought medical attention and discovered that little Cadet had both typhoid and malaria. Plus, he was so malnourished his belly was distended from near-starvation.
That was December, 2005. Cadet is now much healthier and no longer hungry—though it will take a long time for his body to fully recover from the ravages of malnutrition. | The Combined Federal Campaign allows federal employees and military personnel to contribute to any eligible non-profit organization they choose with easy options such as monthly payroll deductions. Nearly 4 million people use the CFC, which solicits donations during its annual charity drive from Sept. 1 to Dec. 15. Established in 1961, it is the largest workplace charity campaign in the country and the only one authorized to solicit and collect contributions from federal employees in the workplace. The CFC touts itself as cost-efficient and totally accountable with mechanisms in place to make sure all the money employees donate gets to the organizations they chose. |
