Position Summary:

The Vice President of Development is responsible for all fundraising and marketing strategies and activities for major and mid-level donors, including Planned Giving. Working closely with the President & CEO and the Director of Marketing & Media, he/she will lead the Cross development team and will help forge new relationships to build Cross International’s visibility, impact and financial resources that will grow CI from its current approximate $7.2 million in annual cash contributions to multiples of that over the coming years.

This role requires a proactive and collaborative servant-leader who drives the major and mid donor development initiatives. The VP is an experienced professional who is able to provide effective strategy and budget development, team leadership and coaching, and new business development to ensure measured outcomes are met. This role is a great opportunity for the person who loves the challenge of both meeting and blowing past goals, enjoys high-level strategic thinking and planning, and who has the desire and ability to roll up their sleeves and engage in detail as needed. He/she will also love to make the donor experience as engaging as possible and to coach others to do the same. Their leadership and work will express Cross International to donors and prospective donors,external and internal constituents, and will have an immense influence on CI’s growth and impact with many of the world’s most vulnerable people over the coming years.

He/she will lead a development staff of four (with room to grow)—some of whom are working virtually—and will engage across all departments of Cross International. There will also be travel internationally to engage with CI’s partners, as needed.

The role requires someone who is an experienced development leader and fundraiser with proven successes … an energetic person of Christian faith who loves a team environment, has tactful interpersonal skills, is proactive, and loves asking “How can I create?” instead of a “What tasks do you want me to do?” He/she loves setting stretch goals and finding ways to meet them, and has a passion to serve the world’s most vulnerable populations with compassion and respect. They will also have an understanding of the contemporary influences within North American evangelical churches and the worldwide Church at large.

Knowledge & Required Competencies

  • Strong personal spiritual commitment.
  • Vision setting abilities and the experience to create viable fundraising plans to support strategies.
  • Entrepreneurial and self-motivated, able to handle multiple tasks with leadership level responsibility.
  • Demonstrated personal successes in growth-oriented major gift fundraising (including personally cultivating new high net worth donors) and special events.
  • Strong coaching abilities to work with your staff to maximize their skills & growth.
  • Excellent ability to create unique concepts and customized proposals from planned projects.
  • Strong understanding of revenue source planning, projections and operating budgets.
  • Strong abilities with donor CRM systems.
  • Adept at selecting, negotiating and managing vendor relationships.
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices in the non-profit sector, with expertise in current fundraising methodologies and regulations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • The core focus of the VP is to oversee the successful development and implementation of long-term major and mid-level donor fundraising including Planned Giving strategies to meet and exceed organizational goals, and ensures these strategies are regularly reviewed and adjusted, as needed.

  • The VP will forge a strong working relationship with the President & CEO, who is an active fundraiser and will have input into overall strategy and implementation framework. Strategies for Giving Circles and an Ambassador program need to be developed and facilitated/supported by the VP.

  • The VP will be an engaged, positive, servant-leader who places a high priority on valuing, leading, motivating, and encouraging staff to perform at their highest levels. He/she will provide relationship driven leadership and coaching for the development team, helping them grow in their craft and to meet planned budgets and goals. This person is forward thinking and can lead into new strategies, new methods and implementation while preserving current successes.

  • The VP will work closely with the Director of Marketing & Media to ensure collaborative strategies and a unified positioning of Cross in which donors have a clear understanding of who Cross is and love their engagement with their mission.

  • She/he is a “player coach”, one who can lead but also participate. Along with team leadership, the VP will have a small portfolio of donors and will be expected to prospect, acquire and cultivate new major donors to build the portfolio. The VP will also be the primary support role for the President & CEO to engage major donors and other key constituents.

  • Oversees the hiring, evaluation, and other personnel matters related to the development department. Insures adherence to the Cross International Christian Community standards in hiring, promotions, and all aspects of personnel management. Utilizes organizational performance measurements when managing staff.

  • Ensure DAFs, corporate giving and stock gifts are have seamless functioning systems

  • Partner with other department heads to ensure CI’s goals and objectives are achieved. Will work with the Finance and Programs departments as needed to prepare and update annual development department operating & revenue budgets and gift income projections. The VP will engage with the Programs department, which leads foundation giving.

  • In conjunction with the Chief Administrative Officer, will evaluate all current systems related to the development department and will look for ways to streamline and economize while maintaining excellence in operations.

  • The VP will travel to meet donors, and to CI field programs for deep understanding of their work which will be translated into effective fundraising (approximately 15-20% of time).

  • Ensure legal and ethical compliance in fundraising, marketing and communications are met. Keeps up to date with developments in industry and ministry standards as law and circumstances change so as to ensure the organization is aware of and meets the highest standards of ethics and transparency as required by ECFA, state and Federal regulations and other oversight groups.

General Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in business, marketing or a related field;
  • Ten (10)+ years of leadership experience with at least five (5) years in nonprofit development leadership;
  • Is a person of committed Christian faith;
  • Will be an active member/attender of a local Christian church and is a contributing part of a local body of believers;
  • Has a deep desire, a calling, to serve the world’s poor;
  • Is eager to participate in the active Christian community at CI;
  • Demonstrated success in the development and leadership of strategic fundraising to help take an organization(s) to the next level;
  • Thrives and is able to lead and work in a changing environment, and to focus on growth while maintaining excellence in practices;
  • Has high degree of knowledge and experience with best practices in major gift fundraising and Planned Giving;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and cultivate long-term relationships;
  • Strong project management skills. Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines;
  • Ability to construct, articulate and implement periodic strategic development plans;
  • High energy and passion for CI mission is essential, in order to motivate individuals and groups;
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Cross International;
  • Is a person who has a sense of humor and enjoys co-workers and the workplace;
  • Residence will be in the Cross International headquarters area, or one of the surrounding communities.


  • New employees are eligible for cost-share family Medical plus employee-paid Dental and Vision care after thirty (30) days of employment; STD, LTD and life insurance after ninety (90) days; FSA after thirty (30) days.
