The reality of living with unsafe water

Susan, a mother of seven in Eastern Zambia, remembers collecting water from a shallow, unprotected source shared with animals insects, and harmful germs.

The water was visibly contaminated… but it was our only option.

Her children suffered from stomach disease and skin infections. They frequently arrived late to school — or missed altogether. She lost sleep worrying about finding water before the source became too crowded.

Susan’s story reflects the reality faced by thousands of families in rural communities throughout Eastern Zambia who are forced to collect water from polluted rivers, stagnant puddles, and hand-dug open wells.
