Multiplying the Harvest
“People want to work, they just need a little help to start.”
Jose speaks from the heart. He has always been a hard worker. The frustrating reality for rural Nicaraguan farmers like him is that no matter how dedicated they are, their efforts often are not enough.
Jose used to spend exhausting hours as a day laborer on coffee farms, while also producing his own crops like corn and beans with help from his wife, Lucia, and their 18-year-old son. And yet, there was barely enough food for the family, which also includes two other kids, ages ten and two.
This weighed heavily on Jose and Lucia, and it seemed there were no viable alternatives. But God had a different plan. Jose jumped at the chance to participate in Cross International’s Community Transformation project.
Through this program, he was given additional tools, learned advanced agricultural techniques, and was introduced to avenues where his crops could be sold at a substantially higher profit margin. He grew thousands of bell peppers, and within two years his income had increased tenfold. Meanwhile, Lucia has been able to raise pigs through a loan she received to further support the family.
Finally, José is seeing the fruits of his labor.
