Major Gifts Development Officer

Reports to: Director of Development

Position Summary:

The Major Gifts Development Officer (MGO) reports to the Director of Development and leads the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of major donors sustaining current giving with disciplined stewardship while upgrading mid-level donors into major donors and opening new pipelines of support. The MGO will confidently ask for and close major gifts, including five- and six-figure commitments, in alignment with donor interests and organizational priorities.

The successful candidate will be capable of building an initial annual revenue base of $450,000–$750,000 within five years. The MGO is a relationship builder and faithful steward who holds a genuine calling to serve the world’s most vulnerable in the name of Jesus and sees fundraising as an act of ministry and an invitation to life-changing partnership. The ideal candidate is proactive and results-oriented, and is comfortable in a hybrid structure, both hierarchical and matrix, where staff members maintain clear reporting lines while, at times, contributing to projects led by other leaders inside the organization.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Major Gifts & Mid-Level Donor Upgrades (40%)

  • Personally prospect, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major donors and prospects, closing five- and six-figure gifts aligned with CI's strategic plan and revenue targets.
  • Develop and execute individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for each donor relationship, in coordination with the Director of Development.
  • Identify and upgrade mid-level donors into major donors through intentional cultivation and mission-aligned invitations to deeper investment.
  • Provide consistent, high-quality stewardship of every relationship.
  • Partner with the Director of Development on donor engagement, providing research, briefings, proposal development, and follow-up.

2. Donor Engagement, Events & Representation (15%)

  • Serve as a credible ambassador for Cross International, articulating mission, story, and impact with clarity in every external engagement.
  • Represent Cross International at ministry events, donor convenings, and community gatherings to expand visibility and deepen relationships.
  • Organize and support small-group donor cultivation gatherings and special events.
  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications on donor-facing materials, impact reports, and messaging that reinforce CI's brand identity and voice.

3. Prospecting & Pipeline Development (10%)

  • Identify, research, and qualify new major gift prospects through personal contacts, referrals, networking, and donor acquisition activities.
  • Analyze donor propensity, capacity, and affinity to determine the best candidates for the major gifts program.
  • Re-engage lapsed donors through intentional outreach, impact storytelling, and re-engagement conversations.

4. Systems, CRM & Compliance (10%)

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed donor records and activity tracking in the CRM (Virtuous).
  • Drive data-informed decision-making, ensuring personal dashboards and KPIs are accurate, timely, and regularly reviewed against the strategic plan.
  • Adhere to ECFA standards, IRS regulations, and Cross International's financial accountability framework in all donor engagement.

5. Championing Values, Culture & Cross-Functional Collaboration (10%)

  • Champion Cross International's core values contribute to building a healthy, faith-centered organizational culture.
  • Actively participate in Cross International's daily devotional and spiritual practices.
  • Be a team player, collaborating across Programs, Marketing & Communications, Finance, and Operations, and lending support to projects led by other leaders inside the organization.
  • As a peer, encourage and support the growth of fellow Development team members by sharing knowledge, promoting professional development opportunities, and contributing ideas for process improvement.

6. Field Travel & International Engagement (15%)

  • Travel domestically to cultivate donors, steward partnerships, and represent Cross International at ministry and sector events (approximately 25% travel).
  • Travel internationally to project sites and accompany donors on vision trips as appropriate and permitted.

  • Nimble and adaptive, pivoting decisively in the face of change without losing mission clarity.
  • A brand steward who understands that every conversation, proposal, and event either builds or diminishes the Cross International brand and acts accordingly.
  • A proactive self-starter who takes initiative, anticipates donor needs, and acts without waiting to be prompted.

Knowledge & Required Competencies

  • Donor CRM proficiency (Virtuous, Salesforce).
  • Strategic networker: converts relationships into revenue, support, and expanded influence.
  • Demonstrated major gift solicitation and closing skills, including five- and six-figure commitments.
  • Exceptional communicator across diverse audiences.
  • Cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong follow-up discipline, organization, and attention to detail.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Business, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
  • CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) certification preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of fundraising or high-level sales experience.
  • Demonstrated success personally managing a major gift portfolio and closing gifts at the $5,000+ level.
  • Experience working within or alongside the North American evangelical church community and global Christian mission networks.
  • International relief, development, or humanitarian ministry experience preferred.
  • Track record of growing portfolio revenue year over year with disciplined donor stewardship.

Location & Travel

  • Remote, home-office based. Applicants must reside and be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally for donor visits, events, and vision trips (approximately 25%, including periodic travel to Cross HQ in South Florida).

Candidates must be active members or regular attenders of a local Christian church and demonstrate a genuine calling and passion for serving those in material and spiritual poverty.

While theological background or ministry experience is not required, a personal commitment to Christian faith practices and a willingness to integrate faith into the workplace culture are essential. Respect for diverse expressions of Christian faith within the organization is expected.
